Description

Ex. Jerry Carr

Skylab III (SL-4) Flown Command Module Rotational Controller Handle Directly from the Family Collection of Mission Commander Jerry Carr, with Certificate of Authenticity. A milled aluminum handle, approximately 4.5" tall with a black "trigger" and indented finger grips. It is custom mounted to a 4.875" x 7.875" x 1" walnut base with an engraved plate above reading: "Skylab IV/ Nov. 16, 1973 - Feb. 8, 1974" and one below reading: "Rotational/ Hand Controller". This was mounted in CSM-118 and removed after the successful mission and presented to Carr. An extremely rare and desirable piece of flown Skylab hardware, seldom offered. Excellent.

The Skylab Rotational Hand Controller was a three-axis joystick used to control the attitude of the Skylab spacecraft. It was a small, pistol-grip type controller with three degrees of freedom: pitch, roll, and yaw. The RHC was mounted on a flexible arm that allowed the astronaut to position it comfortably. To use it, the astronaut would simply move the joystick in the desired direction. This would send a signal to the Skylab's Reaction Control System (RCS), which would fire thrusters to rotate the spacecraft. The RHC was used for a variety of tasks, including attitude control, maneuvering, and docking. The trigger on the RHC could be depressed for communications with the Mission Control Center.
