Description

Skylab I (SL-2) Desk Ashtray Display Containing General Electric Heat Shielding "Parasol" Material. A handsome 8" x 8" x 2.125" wooden tray containing a heavy glass ash (or knick knack) tray. Lining the tray and over the top is a 10" x 5.5" sheet of orange over silver solar shield material. A clear engraved plaque reads:

Skylab I Emergency Heat Shielding
Supplied By The General Electric Company
In The First Major Repair In Space
And Subsequent Successful Mission 6/22/73

Skylab sustained damage during its launch and the crew of SL-2 had to make repairs to make it habitable and functional. This material was used to create a "parasol" to shade the overheated Orbital Workshop. Very fine.
