Description
Mercury-Atlas 6 Friendship 7 Flown Atlas 109D Rocket Fragment Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Deke Slayton. A bent and partially discolored piece of metal, 1.5" x 1.125" overall, from the Atlas rocket that launched John Glenn into the history books on February 20, 1962. The flown fragment is sealed in Lucite, 4.75" x 3.5" x 0.5", with a plaque that reads: "This material was recovered in Africa from Atlas 109D, which remained in orbit after launching America's first orbiting Astronaut John Glenn on his historic flight. While most of the launching vehicle burned during re-entry, some pieces were unexpectedly recovered." Deke Slayton (1924-1993) was scheduled to fly after Glenn on the second orbital flight but an erratic heart rate grounded him. A very rare and desirable item with association to two of the original "Mercury Seven" astronauts. Very fine condition.Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Bobbie Slayton (Slayton's wife): "This Mercury-Atlas flown, metal debris was from John Glenn's Mercury flight in 1962. The piece was recovered in Africa, mounted and presented to Deke Slayton for his contribution to the flight."
