Description
Rare flown personal item
Gemini 10 Flown Toothbrush Originally From the Personal Collection of Mission Commander John Young, with Photo and Signed LOA. An ivory-colored 6.5" long Py-Co-Pay toothbrush, with rubber tip intact, that flew with and was used by Young during the flight of Gemini 10, July 18-21, 1966. This mission, with Michael Collins also aboard, accomplished important objectives needed for the success of future flights: rendezvous, docking, and ETAs. Included with this lot is an 8" x 10" color photo of Young holding both this toothbrush as well as the accompanying Letter of Authenticity transcribed below. Personal flown items are very desirable items for Space collectors especially with this type of provenance. Note: this toothbrush was originally sold by Heritage Auctions in 2009 (Auction #6022, Lot 41102) as part of a collection of flown items directly from his collection.Included with this lot is a signed and illustrated Letter of Authenticity from Young on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that the ivory colored 6.5" long Py-Co-Pay toothbrush that accompanies this letter was flown and used by me aboard the flight of Gemini 10 from July 18-21, 1965. It has been a part of my personal collection since the mission."
Gemini 10 was Young's second of six space flights. The legendary astronaut was the first of the NASA Group Two to fly (Gemini 3). He later was Command Module Pilot on Apollo 10, the dress rehearsal flight for the Apollo 11 landing. Young commanded Apollo 16 and was the ninth man to walk on the moon. He was later chosen to command the first-ever manned test flight of the Space Shuttle (STS-1) and concluded his distinguished spaceflight career as Commander of STS-9 in 1983.
