Description
APOLLO-SOYUZ, THE END OF THE "SPACE RACE"
Apollo-Soyuz Test Project: Flown "Space Magna Carta"
Certificate Signed in Space by Both Crews [and] Three Fédération
Aéronautique Internationale World Record Diplomas for the Flight,
[with] Large Color Photo of the Signing, United States and Soviet
Union, July 1975. A remarkable ensemble commemorating this, one
of the most consequential milestones in the history of spaceflight,
the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet
Union. At its centerpiece is the legendary "Space Magna Carta," a 12" x 9" certificate bearing an image of the docked ships and the official "APOLLO - СОЮЗ" mission insignia, with Russian text on the left and English at right, signed by the two crews: "Thomas P. Stafford", "D. K. Slayton", and "Vance D. Brand" (the Apollo crew); and Alexei Leonov and Valerie Kubasov (the Soyuz crew). This document marks the start of the long road to cooperation in space between the U.S. and Soviet/Russian programs, a significant watershed for the end of the Cold War "Space Race." It was signed in space that day to officially document the event by all the cosmonauts and astronauts and may be the only one available to be offered to the public in the foreseeable future. A more important official document of the history of the United States, space exploration, or U.S. / U.S.S.R relations would be almost unattainable as most of the documents of this magnitude reside in the various governmental archives. incredibly rare opportunity. Uniform small holes punched at each corner and tiny stains at lower left edge do not detract, fine overall.
Text reads: "ПЕРВАЯ МЕЖДУНАРОДНАЯ СТЫКОВКА В КОСМОСЕ / FIRST INTERNATIONAL SPACE DOCKING CERTIFICATE" This is to certify that at 12 hours 09 minutes Washington time and 19 hours 09 minutes Moscow time, on July 17, 1975, flight crews of the United States of America and the Soviet Socialist Republic successfully docked their Apollo and Soyuz Spacecraft in earth orbit. They share the hope that this first International Manned Space Flight will stand in the light of history as a significant advance in the ability of their nations to work together in ways that advance the interests of people everywhere."
Accompanying it are three original Diplôme de Record certificates issued by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the governing body of world aviation and spaceflight records. These elegant Paris-issued diplomas record three distinct achievements of the Apollo-Soyuz mission:
World Record for Greatest Mass Launched into Orbit (20,977 kilograms)
World Record for Duration of Joint Flight (53 hrs, 09 mins, 17 secs)
World Record for Altitude in Joint Manned Flight (237 kilometers)
Each diploma is typeset in ornate script with black and red lettering, and gold borders and decorative filigree work and bears the embossed seal and signatures of the FAI President and Director General. All excellent.
Also included with the lot is an 11" x 8.5" glossy color photo of the signing of these documents onboard Apollo-Soyuz, perfect for accompanying display.
Together, these documents encapsulate both the technical triumph and diplomatic significance of the Apollo-Soyuz mission, the final flight of the Apollo era and a harbinger of the cooperative spirit that would later define the International Space Station. An extraordinary, museum-quality assemblage linking two rival superpowers in the shared pursuit of space exploration. From an important collection of Soviet-era Space history
