Apollo 8 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 238,
Originally from the Personal Collection of Tom Stafford, with His
Signed Letter of Authenticity. This sterling silver 38mm x 30mm
triangular-shaped medal was one of 300 flown on Apollo 8, December
21-27, 1968, into lunar orbit with crewmembers Borman, Lovell, and
Anders. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia (a
Lovell design) depicting a figure eight containing the surnames of
the crew looping around the Earth and the moon symbolizing the
mission number as well as the mission's orbits around both bodies.
The three-sided shape with a rounded bottom imitates the shape of
the Apollo spacecraft. The reverse has the engraved dates of the
mission, serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks.
This mission "set the stage" for the future lunar landing missions.
Very fine.Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity that reads in full: "This medallion flew to the Moon during December 21 to 27, 1968 on the Apollo 8 mission. It was given to me after the flight by Apollo 8 commander Frank Borman. Apollo 8 was the first manned flight to the Moon and made ten lunar orbits during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 1968.
"This medallion has been in my private collection since 1969. The Apollo 8 mission emblem is on the front of the medallion with the mission dates engraved on the back. It is one of the Robbins series of flown Apollo medallions and is serial number 238 of the Apollo 8 set." From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
