Flown to the lunar surface

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown American Flag Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. A 5.875" x 3.875" cloth U.S. flag that flew to the surface of the moon in the LM Orion, along with Young and Charlie Duke, spending seventy-one hours there. Flown Apollo 16 flags, especially those flown to the surface, are rare. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the flag of the UNITED STATES that accompanies this letter was flown to the lunar surface in John Young's LM PPK aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of the John and Susy Young collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label attached, #1733180, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
