Description
Apollo 13 Flown Heat Shield Plug in Lucite from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell. A 1.25" diameter x 1.75" tall, threaded plug taken from the Command Module Odyssey after its return to Earth. It is encased in a clear Lucite cylinder of 2.75" diameter x 2.75" tall. Engraved on the bottom is "APOLLO 13/ APRIL 11-17, 1970". The top of the plug is blackened from the heat of re-entry. Lovell has written on the box top, "A-13 Heat Shield". Excellent condition.This lot includes a signed Letter of Authenticity from Lovell on his letterhead stating: "I hereby certify that this heat shield was part of the Apollo 13 spacecraft. It was given to me shortly after our successful recovery... This heat shield is from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."
