Description

Apollo 12 Complete Flown Heat Shield Ablative Plug #47 in Acrylic Display on Wooden Base Directly from the Dr. Rocco Petrone Family Collection. A 1.375" diameter x 2.5" long threaded plug from the aft heat shield with metal cap and RTV O-ring intact. It is ensconced in a 2.875" diameter x 3" tall cylinder which is seated in a 5" wide x 7" deep x 1.5" (tapering down to 0.875") tall wooden base with an engraved plaque: "APOLLO 12/ Nov. 14-24, 1969". This is only the second of this type of Apollo 12 display that Heritage has offered. The first was Chris Kraft's example; it sold in May 2021 for $17,500. Acrylic scratched on the scorched end with only light wear to the rest, base excellent. Very fine overall.

Each Apollo Command Module's aft heat shield uses 59 bolts to attach the shield to the spacecraft. A plug is placed in the ablative material to cover and protect the bolts. After each mission, the plugs are cored out of the heat shield so that the shield may be removed and inspected. Each plug is unique and has a specific location number engraved on the metal bottom. The plug is made of lightweight fiberglass honeycomb that is hand-filled with an ablative resin material. The shell material is designed to vaporize (ablate) due to atmospheric friction. Some of these numbered plugs were presented to astronauts and VIPs.
