Description

Fourteen Pieces of Apollo 11's Columbia in One Display.

Apollo 11 Command Module Flown Heat Shield Ablater Plugs (Fourteen) in Acrylic. An amazing display item featuring fourteen separate plugs removed from the forward heat shield of the Apollo 11 Columbia spacecraft after its return to earth. They are sealed within a 6.75" x 2.5" x 1" piece of plastic with the explanatory text "APOLLO 11 - Forward Heat Shield Ablator Plugs". These plugs helped protect the space capsule from the heat of reentry; they were threaded into holes to cover bolts around the exterior of the spacecraft. Any part of the legendary Apollo 11 mission is in high demand from space collectors and fourteen of these rare plugs is an opportunity not to be missed. Very fine condition with the top surface a bit rough.

Included with this lot is a collectSPACE.com Statement of Provenance stating that these "...were formerly the property of Howard E. Spencer [who] worked for North American Aviation during the Apollo Program... [H]e served aboard numerous prime recovery ships, bringing him in direct contact with the Apollo 7, Apollo 8, Apollo 9 and Apollo 11 spacecraft..."
