Description

Wally Schirra: File of Numerous Saved Documents, Most Circa 1962-63 and Regarding the Future Apollo Program, Directly from His Family's Collection. An interesting and important group of rarely-seen internal NASA memos, etc. Many are initialed or notated by Schirra. Three items, in particular, caught our eye:
(1) "Gemini Astronaut Selection" Memorandum. An 8" x 10.5" staple-bound book dated May 10, 1962 from NASA - Manned Spacecraft Center at Langley. "Enclosed is a description of a proposed procedure for selecting astronauts for Project Gemini." Filing instructions handwritten on cover.
(2) "Investigation Into Apollo 204 Accident". A prong-bound 8.5" x 11" photocopy of the Congressional document dated April 17, 1967, regarding this tragedy about which Schirra was one of the astronauts who gave testimony.
(3) "Escape and Landing Systems Study" Memorandum. One page, dated November 29, 1962, with his notations as well as an attached page of handwritten notes with drawn images on the subject.
Several dozen pages total in original file folder. Most are period photocopies. Generally fine. Included with this lot will be a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Wally's son, Walter.
