Description

Roger Chaffee Autograph Letter Signed "Rog". Excellent content. Three pages, 8.5" x 11" plain paper, [Houston], February 16, 1964, to his parents. Transcript included. Written just four months after he was chosen as part of NASA's third group of astronauts, Chaffee (1935-1967) sends the latest news to his parents, in part: "...Martha is just finishing up the breakfast dishes. After she is done I guess we will all pile in the car and go see a little more of Houston. This city is huge... We are well into our training program now and quite busy. We are studying geology, mineralogy, petrology (study of rocks), flight mechanics (orbits, etc)... I was at the Cape to watch the Saturn launch a couple of weeks ago... I got the birthday card and money from Grandma & Grandpa and will write and thank them in the next few days... Love from all Sheryl, Steve, Martha, Rog" Chaffee was slated for the prime crew of the first Apollo launch but was tragically killed in a training accident with crewmates Ed White and Gus Grissom on January 27, 1967. Original folds, staple holes, else fine.
