AUTOGRAPHS

Paul Calle, Apollo 11 "First Man On The Moon" Stamp Designer, Signed Sheet of Stamps and Signed Photo. As follows.
(1) A full pane of thirty-two mint 10¢ stamps (Scott #C76) signed in the wide plate block selvage in black ink: "Paul Calle". (2) A 10" x 8" silk finish B&W photo on Kodak Endura paper of Calle holding a large print of the stamp's artwork. Signed in black ink: "Paul Calle/ First Man On The Moon Stamp Artist/ 1969". Both very fine.

In 1969, Paul Calle was selected to design the U.S. postage stamp commemorating the historic event of the first manned moon landing. This selection was a significant honor, reflecting Calle's established reputation and previous involvement with NASA. Paul Calle was one of the original eight artists chosen by NASA in 1962 to document the final mission of Project Mercury. His role expanded to cover the Gemini and Apollo programs, providing him with a deep connection to the space exploration community and firsthand experience with the astronauts and missions. This background made him an ideal candidate for creating a stamp that would capture the monumental achievement of the Apollo 11 mission. Calle's process for designing the "First Man on the Moon" stamp involved creating dozens of preliminary sketches before finalizing the iconic image of Neil Armstrong planting his boot on the lunar surface. The master die for the stamp was even carried to the Moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts, adding a unique historical significance to the design.
