Description

Luna 2 Metal "Scroll" intended to be among the first objects to hit the moon. This is a highly prized and rare souvenir of titanium-aluminum alloy. These scrolls were given out to only the top participants and governmental bodies of Luna 2, the "First Rocket to hit another planetary body (moon)." Many of these identical metal strips were placed in the Luna 2 rocket to be exploded onto the moon along with the pendants of the two different sizes of explosive balls that were aboard the rocket. The idea was to scatter on impact these over the surrounding area as a monument to this first successful flight to the moon for possible recovery by future generations. One side has printed "Union of Socialist Republics" between two stars and the obverse exhibits the date of the flight, September 1959, between the CCCP logo. 10" x 0.75". Excellent condition.
