Description
Gherman Titov's Owned and Worn Soviet Air Force Colonel General's (Three Star) Uniform with Coat, Pants, Shirt, and Tie, Signed. A rare opportunity to own an official Soviet uniform from an important contributor to Space history. Titov, of course, was the second man ever to orbit the earth (seventeen times), spending one full day aboard Vostok 2, August 6-7, 1961. (It would be nearly two years before an American astronaut surpassed that number of orbits.) He was twenty-five years old at launch and remains, to this time, the youngest space traveler. This was Titov's only spaceflight but he would go on to hold many important positions in the Soviet Space program, the military, and the Communist Party. This was his last official uniform as he retired from the Air Force. It was purchased by a collector directly from Titov in 1992. All items excellent, as follows.COAT: Fine olive green wool, double breasted with a six gilt button front. Two lower flap pockets, light blue trim on cuffs, collar, and shoulder boards. Fine gold bullion wire rank insignia directly sewn to collars. Wide directly-sewn shoulder boards with three applied gold bullion stars on each. Fully lined in light green satin with two inside breast pockets, no maker's tag. Signed and dated on inside right pocket.
DECORATIONS: On left breast: seven rows of medal ribbon bars directly applied. On right breast: (1) Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR medal ("ЛЕТУИК КОСМОНАВТ СССР"), red enamel trim, suspended from red silk moiré ribbon. This is an official duplicate made by the mint for wear on a uniform jacket as the original was made of gold and platinum. This order was established in April 1961 and the medal is always worn on right side above all other medals; and (2) original Soviet Pilot-Cosmonaut Wings Second Class, blue and red enamel over gilt. These are quite collectible in their own right.
PANTS: Matching fine quality olive wool pants with light blue stripes outside each leg. Button fly, two slit-type front pockets, watch fob pocket, and a single rear pocket with flap.
SHIRT: "Un-dress" long sleeve lightweight olive wool shirt with seven buttons, two flapped chest pockets, elastic waist. Slip-on three star shoulder boards. Includes matching elastic-neck tie.
