Description
Apollo LM-13 Lunar Module Relay External Attachment. This unusual 2" x 2" x 1.5" flight-ready artifact was obviously built with ultra-light construction in mind. A section of multi-layered thermal jacket protection is attached. The LM-13 jacket of "gold foil" (aluminized mylar) and most of its external attachments were completed but ended up being dismantled and scrapped after the Apollo 18 mission, likely to the crater Copernicus, was canceled. The only other known example of this piece was preserved by an Apollo engineer as a family heirloom Christmas tree ornament. Excellent condition.LM-13 was near enough to completion to be saved from scrapping in the Oceanside landfill, and in 1997, was fitted with a very realistic-appearing jacket of thermal insulation (made from commercial Christmas wrapping paper), Rendezvous and Landing Radar mock-ups, and other external attachments. These were funded by Tom Hanks for Long Island's Cradle of Aviation Museum. From the collection of scientist and author Charles Pellegrino.
