Description

As used on the manned Apollo missions.

Apollo Block II Command Module Flight Director Attitude Indicator. A very rare, important, and desirable piece of equipment manufactured by Honeywell for the Apollo command module. Overall size is 6.875" diameter x 10.75" deep (including the electrical connector protruding from the bottom). The original "INDICATOR, ATTITUDE, FLIGHT DIRECTOR" metallic Honeywell sticker on the side indicates the manufacturer part number as "DJG204E3" and the manufacture date as "19 Sept 1966". Just above that is a metal "Modification Identification" plate with a manufacturer part number of "DGJ264E4" and acceptance date of "11 Apr 67". There appears to be a red inspector's mark next to these plates. This FDAI or "8 Ball" was used to define the relative position of the spacecraft in three-dimensional space. Originally designed to be three different panel instruments, the astronauts, many of which were pilots, lobbied for an all-in-one device similar to the "artificial horizon" indicator in airplanes. Very fine condition with just minor wear.
