Description

From the first man to walk in space

Alexei Leonov's Owned and Worn Soviet Air Force Major General's Uniform with Coat, Pants, Shirt, Tie, and Hat, Signed, with Photographic Provenance. This was purchased by a collector directly from Leonov in early 1992; included is a 7" x 5" color photo of Leonov at his home with this uniform hanging behind him. A rare opportunity to own an official Soviet uniform from an important contributor to Space history, the man who first walked in space and would likely have been the first cosmonaut on the moon had his country's program gone in that direction. This was his last official uniform as he retired from the Air Force in 1991. All items in excellent condition (one flaw noted below).

COAT: Fine olive green wool, double breasted with a six gilt button front. Two lower flap pockets, light blue trim on cuffs, collar, and shoulder boards. Fine gold bullion wire rank insignia directly sewn to collars. Wide directly-sewn shoulder boards with single applied gold bullion stars on each. Fully lined in gold satin with two inside breast pockets, one with maker's tag. Signed and dated on inside right pocket.

DECORATIONS: On left breast: eleven rows of medal ribbon bars directly applied beneath two Gold Star Hero of the Soviet Union medals. On right breast: (1) Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR medal ("ЛЕТУИК КОСМОНАВТ СССР"), red enamel trim, suspended from red silk moiré ribbon. This is an official duplicate made for wear on a uniform jacket as the original was made of gold and platinum. This order was established in April 1961 and the medal is always worn on right side above all other medals; (2) Soviet Air Force Pilot Wings First Class, blue and red enamel with silver trim over gilt, just below; and (3) Zhukovsky Air Force Academy medal ("ВВИА ИМ. ЖУКОВСКОГО"), gilt over red enamel over silver. Leonov graduated from this institution in 1968.

PANTS: Matching fine quality olive wool pants with light blue stripes outside each leg. Button fly, two slit-type front pockets, watch fob pocket, and a single rear pocket with flap.

SHIRT: "Un-dress" long sleeve lightweight olive wool shirt with seven buttons, two flapped chest pockets, elastic waist. Slip-on single star shoulder boards, both signed underneath by Leonov. Includes matching elastic-neck tie. Minor slit in one pocket, otherwise excellent.

HAT: Peaked Cap style with olive wool body and light blue piping, blue wool base, black bill. Gold bullion wire Air Force insignia on peak. Body with gold bullion wreath with metal red star hammer & sickle device. Gold chin cord with gold button. Lining matches coat lining. Leather sweat band and sweat diamond, signed and inscribed inside to "David" by Leonov.
