Space Shuttle Robbins Medal collection from the astronaut who began the tradition
Space Shuttle STS-41-C (April 1984) through STS-135 (July 2011)
Collection of 118 Unflown Silver Robbins Medals Directly from the
Personal Collection of Astronaut Walt Cunningham, with Signed LOA,
Missing only Seven. An incredible and likely unique collection
covering twenty-seven years and 118 flights of the Space Shuttle
program that included numerous highlights and two horrible
tragedies (both STS-51-L and STS-107 medals are included). Medals
for these STS flights were issued in smaller quantities than those
of the Apollo era and are rarely offered singly much less in a
collection like this. This group is extraordinary in that all 118
medals are still in their original cases with serial-numbered
stickers and are in gorgeous mint state condition. It is of our
opinion that some of the most elaborate and beautiful medals ever
produced by Robbins are included in this series, well-suited for
display.In the chronological range mentioned above, the only missing medals are: STS-41-D, STS-51-D, STS-31, STS-49, STS-61, STS-95, and STS-114. If one intends to collect a complete set of these historical examples of the medalist's art, there is no better way to get started than this lot.
Who better to have assembled this collection than Apollo 7 Lunar Module Pilot Walt Cunningham? We have him to thank for the tradition of the Robbins Company producing medals for all the NASA missions since his flight in 1968. To quote from Howard Weinberger's excellent reference work The Robbins Medallions, Flown Treasure from the Apollo Space Program: "It began with Walt Cunningham and Apollo 7. Cunningham wanted a special commemorative memento made to take with him on his flight into space... He then began working with a jeweler in Cocoa Beach, Florida to have a commemorative medallion made for himself with the emblem and details of the Apollo 7 mission. As the jeweler began the task, a number of the other astronauts heard about Cunningham's idea and also wanted to order one or more of the medallions. As the requests increased, the jeweler put Cunningham in contact with The Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, a manufacturing company that specializes in casting and stamping. Cunningham worked with Robert Sweet, then the president of The Robbins Company, and George Ryan, the sales development manager, to produce these first astronaut Robbins Medallions."
