Description

Gold Robbins, Ex. Shannon Lucid

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown Gold Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 15F, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Shannon Lucid, with Signed Letter of Authenticity. This 39mm diameter 10K gold medal was one of only twenty-four gold examples flown aboard Columbia, the first manned, reusable spacecraft, on the first orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle. The obverse features the mission insignia, the shuttle, and its orbit around the Earth with the ship's name "Columbia" and the surnames of the crew. The reverse includes the names of the crewmembers, "John W. Young" and "Robert L. Crippen", and the engraved dates, "April 12, 1981" and "April 14, 1981 / RW23 Edwards AFB". The serial number is on the rim along with the gold and Robbins hallmarks. This was a very important and high-risk "shakedown" cruise for the shuttle program. The original Robbins plastic case with numbered sticker on the bottom is included. A real rarity and a beautiful medal, especially in gold. Excellent.

Chosen as an astronaut in 1978, Shannon Lucid flew on the Shuttle five times as a Mission Specialist: STS-51-G, STS-34, STS-43, STS-58, and STS-76/79 (where she was the only American woman to have served aboard Mir).

Included with this lot is a Letter of Authenticity signed by Shannon Lucid: "This STS-1 gold Robbins Medallion, #15F, was flown in space on that mission and was part of my personal collection."
