Description

Soviet Space Program Medals, Sputnik: "First Artificial Earth Satellite" Commemorative Bronze Medal, 1957. A 65mm medal: the obverse features a stylized depiction of Sputnik 1 in orbit above Earth, with radiating lines symbolizing its radio transmissions, stars scattered in the background, and the inscription "CCCP" across the Earth's surface, a laurel branch appears below, signifying triumph; the reverse bears the legend in raised Cyrillic characters (translated): "Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in honor of the launch in the USSR of the first artificial Earth satellite, October 4, 1957", with a small hammer-and-sickle emblem below. A significant medal, quite rare and desirable. Near mint, in original presentation box.

This medal was issued shortly after the historic launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite to orbit the Earth, an achievement that stunned the world and inaugurated the Space Age. The Academy of Sciences produced a limited number of these bronze medals, typically presented to scientists and engineers associated with the program and to distinguished visitors and dignitaries. From an important collection of Soviet-era Space history
