Description

Soviet Space Program Medals, Sergei Korolev: Commemorative Bronze Medal, 1972 by V. Larin. A 60mm high relief medal: the obverse features a high-relief portrait of Korolev (1906-1966), the Chief Designer of the Soviet space program, facing right, his name С.П. КОРОЛЕВ and dates 1906-1966 around; the reverse depicts the façade of the Korolev House-Museum in Moscow with the Russian legend ДОМ-МУЗЕЙ АКАДЕМИКА С.П. КОРОЛЕВА ("House-Museum of Academician S. P. Korolev"). Artist's signature and date, В. ЛЯРИН 1972 Г., appear in the exergue. Near mint.

This medal was struck to commemorate the establishment of the Korolev House Museum, dedicated to the life and achievements of the architect of the Soviet space program. Sergei Korolev's pioneering leadership brought the USSR its most dramatic early space triumphs, including the launches of Sputnik 1 in 1957 and Vostok 1 carrying Yuri Gagarin in 1961. His identity was secret during his lifetime; only after his death in 1966 was his name made public. A beautiful and historically significant medal honoring the father of practical astronautics. From an important collection of Soviet-era Space history
