Description

Apollo Mission Commanders: Two 1972 German Volksmarsch Medals, Gold and Silver Finish. Incredibly rare high relief medals of 2" diameter featuring a 0.75" diameter spherical model of the moon mounted at the middle of each medal. They are suspended on a chain from a 1.625" x 0.625" metal tag that reads "1.IVV VOLKSMARSCH/ 1972/ TSV FRICKENHAUSEN". That indicates that these medals originated with the First Internationaler Volkssport Verband (International Federation of Popular Sports) People's March in 1972 at the Sports Field in Frickenhausen, Germany. Around the perimeter are the names and images of the commanders of the first five moon landings (Apollo 17 had not yet flown). An American flag is shown in the center of the moon. Space historian Howard Weinberger has discovered just three of these medals over the years; two in a gold finish and one in silver. Heritage sold his duplicate gold version in June 2022 for $812.50. Offered here are the final two. Don't miss out. Light wear, fine. From The Howard Weinberger Collection.
