Description
One of only eighty flown.
Apollo 17 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan, Serial Number 73, with Signed LOA. This 35mm sterling silver medal was one of only eighty flown aboard Apollo 17, December 7-19, 1972, with crewmembers Gene Cernan, Ron Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. A total of 300 were minted to commemorate this sixth and final lunar landing of the NASA program. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the head of the Greek god Apollo, a U.S. flag and eagle, the moon, and the surnames of crewmembers. The mission dates are engraved on the reverse with the phrase "The Beginning". The serial number and sterling and Robbins hallmarks are on the rim. An eyelet has been added to the top to allow it to be worn as a necklace. This is the rarest of all Apollo silver Robbins medallions and only the second flown Apollo 17 example Heritage has offered. Being from the flight commander's collection makes it even more desirable. With original case. Excellent condition.Included with this lot is a handwritten letter of authenticity signed "Gene Cernan" on Apollo 17 letterhead, stating: "I hereby certify and confirm/ that silver Apollo XVII Robbins/ medallion, serial # 73, was/ flown to the moon and/ remained in lunar orbit/ aboard the Command Module/ 'America' during/ the mission, December 7-19, 1972/ [signed in script]/ Gene Cernan/ Commander/ Apollo XVII".
Also included is a second handwritten letter signed "Gene Cernan" on Apollo 17 letterhead, stating: "This medallion, Serial #73, with a/ silver eyelet was, to the best/ of my recollection, worn by a/ very personal friend, who when/ learning of the loss of most/ of my remaining flown/ Apollo XVII Medallions returned/ it to me as a special/ gesture of friendship./ [signed in script]/ Gene Cernan/ Commander/ Apollo XVII/ 11/2011". He is referring to an incident where part of his personal collection was stolen and this was returned to him by its owner.
