Description
Apollo 13
Apollo 13 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 206, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, with Letter of Authenticity Signed by His Niece. A stunning 32mm sterling silver medal. Due to the last minute substitution of Swigert for Mattingly and the problems that prohibited Apollo 13 from accomplishing its mission, all of the original flown medallions were melted down. This is one of 404 newly-designed sterling silver medallions that were struck from the flown metal. The design features the mission insignia depicting the name of the mission, three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan "Ex Luna, Scientia" ("from the moon, knowledge"). The reverse features the names of the crewmembers, the modules, Aquarius (lunar) and Odyssey (command), the engraved dates of launch and return, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. An absolutely beautiful medal and an excellent example.Included with this lot is a Letter of Authenticity signed by Jeaneen Spinlli on Nate D. Sanders Auctions letterhead stating, in full: "I certify that this Apollo 13 Robbins medal was flown aboard Apollo 13, the mission in which Jack Swigert announced, 'Houston, we have a problem here,' while serving as Command Module Pilot. All of the original medals taken on the space flight were melted down and a new set was made from them featuring a new design. This is made from the flown metal, one of 404 newly-designed medals. Coin depicts mission insignia, including the name of the mission, three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan 'Ex Luna, Scientia' (from the moon, knowledge). Verso lists the crew members, space modules, and engraved dates of launch and return, as well as the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. This is medal number 206. Sterling silver medal measures 1.25". The medal remained in Jack Swigert's estate until it was consigned to Nate D. Sanders Auctions."
