Description
Ex. James Lovell with handwritten provenance
Apollo 13 Flown MS69 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 284, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell, with Handwritten and Signed Letter of Certification. A stunning 32mm sterling silver medal. Due to the last minute substitution of Swigert for Mattingly and the problems that prohibited Apollo 13 from accomplishing its mission, all of the original flown medallions were melted down. This is one of 404 newly-designed sterling silver medallions that were struck from the flown metal. The design features the mission insignia depicting the name of the mission, three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan "Ex Luna, Scientia" ("from the moon, knowledge"). The reverse features the names of the crewmembers, the modules, Aquarius (lunar) and Odyssey (command), the engraved dates of launch and return, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A beautiful Superb Gem Uncirculated medal; it would be difficult to imagine a nicer example, especially with provenance from the mission commander.Included with this lot is a 2008-dated handwritten and signed Letter of Certification from James Lovell on his business letterhead, reading: "I hereby confirm and certify that Apollo 13 silver Robbins Medal serial number 284 is one that was struck with silver that was flown to the moon with me aboard the mission April 11-17, 1970. Although we were not able to land on the lunar surface, the Apollo 13 mission will always be remembered as one of our country's greatest successes. This medal has been in my collection of personal mementos since the mission. Best wishes, James Lovell, Apollo 13 Commander".
