NGC-Certified "Ex. Charles M. Duke, Jr."
Apollo 12 Flown MS66 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Charlie Duke, Serial Number 166, with Signed LOA. This 32mm sterling silver medal was one of 262 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, with crewmembers Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Alan Bean. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a clipper ship arriving at the moon (it was an all-Navy crew), trailing fire and flying the U.S. flag. There are four stars in the background, one each for the three astronauts who flew the mission and one for Clifton Williams who was killed on October 5, 1967, during a training flight. He had been assigned to the back-up crew for what would be the Apollo 9 mission and would have most likely been assigned as lunar module pilot for Apollo 12. The reverse has the dates of the mission along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. This is only the fourth Apollo 12 Robbins that Heritage has offered, and the first to be NGC encapsulated and graded- as Gem Uncirculated no less!Included with this lot is a handwritten letter of authenticity signed "Charles M. Duke, Jr." on Apollo 16 letterhead, dated "November 16, 2007", stating: "Re: Apollo 12 Silver Robbins Medal/ I hereby certify that Apollo 12 Silver Robbins/ medal, serial number 166, was one that was flown/ to the moon aboard the mission November 14-24, 1969./ As a member of the astronaut office, I was/ permitted to purchase this flown medal. It has/ been in my possession and a part of my personal/ collection of space artifacts since receiving it/ shortly after the mission./ My very best wishes./ [signed in script]/ Charles M. Duke, Jr./ Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot."
