Description

Apollo 11 Lunar Module Flown Apollo 1 MS64 NGC Gilt Fliteline Medallion Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified and Encapsulated by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty. This gold-colored 32mm medal features the mission insignia on the obverse depicting a command/service module flying over the southeastern United States. The moon is in the distance, symbolizing the program's eventual goal. The reverse has "WHITE GRISSOM CHAFFEE APOLLO 1" around; the center was left blank where the flight information would have been engraved after the mission. These were prepared to go on the first Apollo mission with Gus Grissom, Ed White II, and Roger Chaffee who were all tragically killed in a training exercise fire in January 1967. As a tribute to lost friends and comrades, Neil Armstrong carried this medal in his Lunar Module PPK to the surface of the moon. A beautiful and poignant relic of a terrible disaster, the first of the U.S. space program, in Choice Uncirculated condition. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Astronauts Memorial Foundation.
