Medal #1, with diamond
Apollo 10 Flown MS66 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial #1,
Set with Diamond and Made into Pin, Originally from the Personal
Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan, with His
Handwritten and Signed Letter of Certification. This 29mm x
31mm sterling silver shield-shaped medal was one of 300 flown to
the moon aboard Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, with crewmembers Tom
Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. The obverse of the medal
features the mission insignia depicting a large Roman numeral "X"
on the moon with the command and lunar modules preparing to
rendezvous. Earth is visible in the background. The reverse has the
serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A
particularly desirable Gem Uncirculated example with the #1 serial
number.Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Certification from Cernan on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that Apollo X Silver Medallion, serial number One (1), further identified by a diamond set on the obverse and pin assembly on the reverse, was flown with me aboard the Apollo X mission May 18-26, 1969. This unique medallion was flown as a special gift for my sister, personally carried and presented to her shortly after the mission. As a result it was not returned to the Robbins Company for the engraving of the mission dates on the reverse as were other Apollo X medallions."
