Description
NGC-Certified "Ex. Walter Cunningham"
Apollo 10 Flown MS65 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Walt Cunningham, Serial Number 60, with Signed LOA. This 29mm x 31mm sterling silver shield-shaped medal was one of 300 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, with crewmembers Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. The medallions stayed with Young aboard the Command Module Charlie Brown while Stafford and Cernan flew the Lunar Module Snoopy to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface on a full-scale dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a large Roman numeral "X" on the moon with the command and lunar modules preparing to rendezvous. Earth is visible in the background. The reverse has the engraved mission dates along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A Gem Uncirculated example.Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Walter Cunningham" on his personal letterhead, stating: "Artifacts from the Apollo missions are ideal souvenirs of 'man's greatest adventure.' They are the ultimate collectibles from the Apollo program to land a man on the Moon-the crowning achievement of the 20th century. Due to weight constraints, Apollo crews were permitted to carry only a limited number of personal mementos. Many of those items were intended for NASA ground crews, family and personal friends. The most credible and valuable items are those obtained directly from the astronauts who flew those historic missions and can be personally authenticated by the astronaut. I hereby warrant and certify that the silver Apollo 10 Robbins Medallion, serial number #60, is from my personal collection of artifacts from my time as a NASA astronaut. The Apollo 10 mission was a full dress rehearsal of the Lunar landing which came on Apollo 11. It has been in my possession since it was given to me by the crew of Apollo 10."
