The first Hasselblad in Space

Hasselblad 500c Vintage Camera, Modified for Spaceflight. A vintage Hasselblad camera which is identical in appearance to the model flown by Wally Schirra aboard Mercury-Atlas 8. Hasselblad cameras played a significant role in documenting early space missions and later became famous for capturing some of the most iconic images of the Apollo program. The camera body measures 3" x 4.5" x 3.5" and features an 80 mm lens with "Carl Zeiss, Nr6305337, Planar 1:2.8 f=80mm" on the inner rim. The Hasselblad 500C was selected for its lightweight design and ease of use, making it ideal for space missions where weight and space were at a premium. Prior to the mission the standard commercial model was heavily modified by NASA. What makes this particular example so interesting is that it features many of the same modifications that were made prior to the Sigma 7 flight. This included removing every aspect that NASA deemed as "superfluous" added weight and painting the exterior black. This example also features the pieces of adhered velcro that appear on the camera that Schirra carried. All aspects of the camera appear functional. It is unknown if this camera was used in any official capacity, or was modified for display purposes only. An incredibly displayable and important component to the history of spaceflight. Some age related wear, very fine.
