Description
Apollo Program: Lunar Module Rocket Engine, Reaction Control System Marquardt R-4D. A rare offering of an original rocket made for NASA; sixteen of just such an engine as this (with an extended nozzle) were mounted on the exterior of each lunar module in four quadruple clusters. This piece of history has three separate ID plates, one each for the fuel and oxidizer valve assemblies, and one for the entire assembled part which reads, in part: "ENGINE - ROCKET/ Part No. 228687-529/ Ser. No. 0094/ Date 1066". There are several numbers scratch-engraved on the part as well as inspector marks. The Marquardt Corporation was awarded the contract to build the reaction-control rocket engines for the Apollo spacecraft in 1963. They were first flown in the unmanned Apollo-Saturn 201 test flight launched in February 1966. Designed for maneuvering in space, this was a bipropellant engine using hypergolic nitrogen tetroxide and hydrazine as propellants, generating 100+ pounds of thrust. Excellent condition.Auction Info
