Description
Apollo Lunar Module Test Article #3 (LTA-3) Signal Processor. A rare piece from the period of lunar module testing for flight. A black box of approximately 6.75" x 5" x 8" with a plate attached: "Signal Processor M/U/ LSC 380-01170-40/ 763-0188/ LTA-3" and a Grumman part number tag: "LSC-380-00170-40/ Signal Processor/ M/U". The LTAs were non-flight Lunar Modules on which construction methods and stress tests were conducted (including the occasional crash test). This signal processor was used to test the shock-absorbent foam that protected its transistor circuitry. The processor was drop-tested, then dissected to determine whether the components would remain in place within the foam during launch-related "pogo" effects or a hard landing on the moon. Subsequently, the crew-rated lunar modules flew with the protective foam, successfully tested within this piece. LTA-3 is probably the unidentified LTA currently on display in Huntsville. LTA-2 was scrapped. LTA-1 is on display at Long Island's Cradle of Aviation Museum. Fair condition. From the collection of scientist and author Charles Pellegrino.Auction Info
