STS-3 flown flight plan, complete
Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-3) Flown "Crew Activity Plan" Checklist Book Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Jack Lousma, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A continuation of the previous "Post Insertion" book; this is better known as the mission's Flight Plan. A massive 200+ page checklist book printed on 10" x 8.5" tabbed cardstock, three-hole punched, and held together with three binder rings. There are thirteen tabbed sections: one for each of the eight days of the flight plus "Summary Timeline", "Minimum RSC Usage", "High Priority Mission", "Abort to Orbit", and "Consumables Curve". We note literally hundreds of handwritten notes and calculations throughout the checklist as well as a few page updates from the flight printer. On the front cover is the STS-3 mission insignia with a red line at the right edge. It is signed at the left side: "This 'Crew Activity Plan'/ (aka 'Flight Plan')was/ flown on the STS-3/ mission (Columbia)/ and was used/ by both crew-/ members during/ the flight./ Jack Lousma/ CDR STS-3/ March 22-30, 1982/ ". A rare opportunity to own the flight plan for the third test flight of the Shuttle program. Fine with light wear from use.Included with this lot is a very informative signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify the STS-3 Crew Activity Plan (CAP) that accompanies this letter was flown in space and was used by the crew aboard the STS-3 mission during March 22-30, 1982. The CAP (aka Flight Plan) essentially covers the On-Orbit phase of flight. As the third of four Orbital Flight Tests, STS-3's On-Orbit prime test objectives included evaluation of the Space Shuttle's response to extremes of thermal stress, evaluation of the Remote Maneuvering System (RMS) with a Payload attached, operation of the Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS), and fifteen scientific experiments located in the Cabin and the Payload Bay. Please refer to www.nasa.gov for more details about the STS-3 mission objectives, scientific experiments, acronyms, etc. referenced in the CAP. The CAP begins when the Post Insertion checklist is finished at four hours Mission Elapsed Time (MET) after liftoff. It opens with a Summary Timeline for each day of the mission. It follows with detailed daily plans for each Flight Day, and it ends a few hours before Entry when the crew refers to the Deorbit Prep checklist. Occasionally, the CAP refers to other checklists or more detailed procedures denoted by numbers in a circle. The MET, day/night cycles, and contact with ground communications stations are depicted on the left margin of each page of the CAP throughout the mission. There are separate action columns for the Commander (CDR), Pilot (PLT), and Mission Control Center (MCC), and there is a column for additional Notes. The black-typed procedures in the CDR and PLT columns are the preplanned activities for the crew. The red notations were added after the final CAP was printed and refer primarily to Earth photo opportunities, or they are preflight pen and ink additions and corrections. The penciled annotations were made by the crew during the mission and include qualitative observations, procedural completions, changes requested by MCC, numeric quantities for system operations, numeric records of system performance, procedural reminders, etc. Finally, there are three Contingency Timelines beginning on Page 5-1 in the event one of these failures invalidates the CAP but enables continuation of the flight with alternative procedures. A "Consumables Curves" section enables the tracking of critical consumables required to complete the mission. This STS-3 Crew Activity Plan is from my personal collection and has been in my possession since the mission was flown in 1982."
