Description
Gemini 9A Flown EVA Activation Checklist Signed by and from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Gene Cernan. An eleven-page checklist printed on cardstock with heavyweight card covers, 3.75" x 8" in size, bound together with clear tape, and with a punched hole at lower right. The top front cover contains the following data: "CF 55047- 6", "S/N 12", and "SET A". The front, back, inside front, and five page tabs all have strips of Velcro to facilitate this item's use in the space capsule. Captain Cernan has certified and signed the front cover: "Flown on Gemini IX Gene Cernan". The section titles are as follows: page one- "POST RNDZ & PRE EVA CHECKLIST"; page two- "EVA ACTIVITY"; page eight- "SUIT INTEGRITY CHECK (CMD PILOT)"; and page ten- "SUIT INTEGRITY CHECK PILOT". There are numerous handwritten notes in this fascinating checklist giving a rare insight to the numerous important steps needed to perform any activity in these pioneering manned space missions. Extremely fine condition. This particular spacewalk, the second ever attempted by an American, is quite notable as it was nearly disastrous for Gene Cernan. Little was known then about the challenges of extravehicular activity and a much too-strenuous series of activities was planned for this EVA causing Cernan's visor to fog up, his suit overheat, and his heart rate to soar to 195 beats per minute. With great difficulty, Cernan safely re-entered the spacecraft after a harrowing 128 minutes outside. This dramatic EVA proved to be a milestone event in the history of spacewalking. It produced profound changes in how all future spacewalks would be conducted and trained for. New space suit designs, the use of liquid cooling garments, the use of underwater training, anti-fogging methods for helmet visors, and the evolution in the use and design of tethers, umbilicals, restraints, and hand-holds were developed based on Cernan's Gemini 9 spacewalking experience. Complete checklists are rarely offered complete. This is a true piece of space history.
