Description
With notations made during the mission by Neil Armstrong.
Apollo 11 Flown Flight Plan Page 3-5 & 3-6 with Annotations by Neil Armstrong, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 10.5" x 8" page numbered 3-5/3-6, three hole punched, from the mission's Flight Plan "P/N #SKB32100080-350" and "S/N 1001" (a copy of the front cover of this book is included with the lot). This page covers hour four to six of the mission. Aldrin has signed on the 3-5 side: "Flown to the Moon Buzz Aldrin" and on the 3-6 side: "Carried to the Moon/ on Apollo XI/ Buzz Aldrin". During the flight, Commander Pilot Neil Armstrong made several notations on the 3-6 side as described by Aldrin in the LOA. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on Aldrin's personal letterhead stating, in full: "Enclosed with this letter is a sheet numbered 3-5 and 3-6 from the Apollo 11 Flight Plan, Part No. SKB32100080-350, S/N 1001. It is part of the entire document that was carried to the Moon in Command Module Columbia during the first lunar landing mission. This sheet is from the detailed timeline section and covers hour four to the beginning of hour six in the mission. This sheet has the very first timeline entries that Commander Neil Armstrong made during the flight.
"Page 3-5 lists the tasks associated with LM ejection from the Saturn V third stage. After a "GO" from Mission Control, the pyrotechnic charges were armed and fired which released the LM. Mike Collins then eased the CSM/LM docked configuration away from the S-IVB or third stage, then performed an evasive maneuver to put us clear of that stage.
"Page 3-6 has the slingshot maneuver to send the S-IVB into solar orbit via the Moon. We then climbed out of our space suit equipment and stowed that gear. Neil Armstrong recorded our guidance platform realignment program (P52) N71 values of '17, 34,' the N05 values of '.02' and the X, Y, Z N93 values of '-00.172, -00.050, 00.060.' He then added '2nd time' values of ' -.171, -.052, -.055.' Neil logged these values at a GET of '5:39:45' (hours, minutes, seconds) into the mission. These were the REFSMMAT or Reference Stable Member Matrix residual values based on star observations through the sextant. Neil also wrote the stars used for the realignment, star numbers '17 & 34.'
"The flight plan was probably the single most important document related to the success of our mission. It provided a time schedule of crew activities and spacecraft maneuvers to accomplish the first lunar landing.
"This page has been in my private collection since 1969. I have written on page 3-5: 'Flown to the Moon' and signed it near the bottom. I have also written on page 3-6: 'Carried to the Moon on Apollo XI' and signed it near the upper right corner. Additionally, a copy of the flight plan cover is enclosed."
