Description

THE SOVIET SPACE PROGRAM

Soviet Sokol K Pressurized Spacesuit, Manufactured by NPP Zvezda. A rare opportunity to own an early example of a Soviet "rescue" suit including helmet, avionics, and gloves, as made by NPP Zvezda for Soyuz cosmonauts. The pressure-type suit is white nylon canvas with light blue trim and internal lining. It has an attached pressurized hood with hinged plastic visor securing to blue anodized aluminum clavicle flange, trussed sleeves, anodized aluminum umbilical interfaces on body for electrical, air and coolant line with attached cables and hoses. Detachable gloves serial numbered and legs have pleated knees with a utility pocket on each, and calibrated straps attached to metal rings on side seams and along crotch. The Sokol suit was designed as a response to the Soyuz 11 disaster in 1971. During reentry of the mission the capsule depressurized, killing the three-man crew. This tragedy led to the development of the suit which was used on Soyuz 12 and all subsequent missions. The initials "D.V.A." are present over the right chest with a 2.75" x 4.75" Soviet flag present on the left shoulder.

The initials indicate the suit was issued to cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov. Dzhanibekov is one of the most decorated cosmonauts in history, having flown on five orbital missions and was twice presented the "Hero of the Soviet Union" award. Due to unspecified circumstances, the attached gloves bear markings for Vladimir Kovalyonok, a fellow crew member of Dzhanibekov aboard the Salyut 6 space station. Kovalyonok was also a two-time recipient of the "Hero of the Soviet Union" award. It is unclear as to whether the suit was used for flight or training purposes, but does have wear commensurate with age and use. This is the first example of the earlier Sokol-K suit Heritage has offered, and is an exceedingly rare opportunity. Overall fine condition with definite signs of use and wear.
