Description

SOVIET & CHINESE SPACE PROGRAMS

Original Soviet Orlan D Spacesuit. A vintage Soviet spacesuit manufactured by NPP Zvezda that was designed specifically for EVA activity. The suit is comprised of an aluminium torso and backpack with nylon arms and legs. Multiple serial numbered connections and mounted equipment can be observed throughout the suit. The fiberglass helmet and visor are permanently affixed to the torso. There is a large latch on the backpack that would allow the cosmonaut to enter the suit. The torso is typically covered by a white cover that is not present with this example. First used in 1977, the Orlan D was designed for long-duration spacewalks outside spacecraft. Following its successful use, the Orlan was primarily used for extravehicular activities on Salyut and Mir space stations, as well as during the early years of the International Space Station. The attached backpack was used to provide oxygen, temperature control, and remove carbon dioxide, allowing cosmonauts to work in space independently for extended periods. The rear-entry and semi-rigid design of the Orlan-D influenced the development of other space suits, including newer Russian models and similar designs considered for lunar or Martian exploration suits. Age and use related wear throughout, gloves not present. Overall very good.
