GERMAN ROCKETRY
An historical collection of vintage covers and letters related to the V1 and V2, a researcher's dream

V1 & V2 Rocket Cover and Letter Collection of More Than 170 Items. Most of these covers contain the original handwritten letters. All are related to the production, protection, and launching of these deadly weapons, fired mostly at England starting in 1944 and 1945. These covers were essentially all sent through the German Feldpost system and have the FPNs noted on the fronts. Many of these letters and covers include handwritten summaries of content on small paper slips. As a whole, there is likely enough material here for a scholarly paper or even a book. Separately, there are a legion of collectors who would wish to purchase them singly for either content of just the postal markings. A rare opportunity. Condition is commensurate for age.

The V-1 flying bomb (German: Vergeltungswaffe 1 "Vengeance Weapon 1") was an early cruise missile. The first in a series of retaliatory or reprisal weapons seeking vengeance for the Allied bombing of German cities. Its official Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) designation was Fi 103. It was also known to the Allies as the buzz bomb or doodlebug. The V-2 rocket (German Vergeltungswaffen 2) was the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile and was was the first artificial object to travel into Space by crossing the Kármán Line. Both were developed at the Peenemünde Army Research Center by the Luftwaffe at the beginning of the Second World War.

Feldpost (Field Post) is the German military mail service that dates back to the Seven Years War (1756-1763). At the beginning of World War II, it allowed free mailing within Germany for the military. As Germany's conquest of Europe continued, the service was expanded to the occupied countries. Each battalion was assigned a five digit code number called a Feldpost number (FPN). By 1940, letter prefixes "L" and "M" (Kriegsmarine) were attached to the FPN of units belonging to the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. A further breakdown by military units was added by attaching letter prefixes "A" through "E" at the end of each FPN. The postal cover itself was usually stamped with a military Feldpost Cancellation and Official Military Unit Seal. Generally, Feldpost mail could not be handled by civil post offices. If a soldier wanted to send mail through a civil post office, he had to pay the going postal rate. Included with this lot are two extensive printouts of WWII Feldpost numbers, one by unit, the other by FPN.
