Description

Mercury Seven Astronauts: Set of Individually-Signed Philatelic Covers. Quite an interesting group of seven airmail covers signed by America's first-chosen astronauts. Six of them are on matching 7¢ embossed stamped envelopes bearing January 28, 1960, cancellations at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia; they are addressed to the same person, have a color facial portrait cut from LIFE Magazine, and are rubber-stamped twice: "Astronaut" and "Project Mercury". The seventh (Glenn) is on a 6¢ + 1¢ embossed cover with a Port Canaveral hand cancel dated May 5, 1961 (the day of Shepard's flight) with a smaller pasted-on portrait and addressed to a different individual. Each is signed by the pictured astronaut near his photo, as follows: "M. Scott Carpenter", "Leroy G. Cooper Jr", "John H. Glenn Jr", "Virgil I Grissom", "Walter M Schirra Jr", "Alan B Shepard Jr", and "Donald K. Slayton". Included is an RR Auction COA, signed by expert Scott Cornish. Very fine condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.
