Description
Mercury-Redstone 4 (Liberty Bell 7): Gus Grissom Signed Launch Cover. A philatelic cover featuring a Clyde Sarzin cachet with a B&W newspaper-type photo of Grissom, a large facsimile autograph, and text as follows: "Today U.S. Air Force Captain Virgil (Gus) Grissom successfully piloted the Liberty Bell 7 capsule into space, U.S.A. Second man in space." The 4¢ "Lincoln" definitive affixed is hand-canceled at Port Canaveral on July 21, 1961. Signed vertically at left edge in black ballpoint: "Virgil I. Grissom". Rare and desirable. Sarzin addressed. Excellent. Included, for purposes of display or matting, is a glossy color business suit & Mercury model photo of Grissom. Also known as Liberty Bell 7, Mercury-Redstone 4 was the second American suborbital crewed flight, piloted by astronaut Gus Grissom. This mission successfully demonstrated spacecraft and pilot performance during a roughly 15-minute flight reaching over 100 miles altitude. While the flight itself was nominal, the mission is famously remembered for the premature blowing of the spacecraft's hatch upon splashdown, which caused the capsule to flood and sink shortly after recovery. Despite this, the mission contributed valuable operational experience and underscored the risks of early human spaceflight. Grissom was recovered safely from the Atlantic Ocean by the USS Randolph. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
