Mercury-Atlas 6 was NASA's first crewed orbital flight, famously piloted by astronaut John Glenn aboard the spacecraft Friendship 7. This mission marked a major milestone as Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth, completing three orbits during a nearly 5-hour mission. The flight validated key spacecraft systems and human endurance in orbit, proving that astronauts could perform controlled orbital operations and safely re-enter Earth's atmosphere. Glenn's successful mission galvanized American confidence during the early space race and set the stage for more ambitious programs like Gemini and Apollo. After splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, Glenn was recovered by the USS Noa. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
