Description
Gemini 12 Rare Backup Crew (Cooper, Cernan) Signed Launch Cover. A philatelic cover with a 5¢ "We Appreciate Our Servicemen" stamp affixed at right bearing a hand cancelation from Kennedy Space Center dated November 11, 1966, the day that Gemini 12 was launched. There is a rubber stamped NASA KSC cachet at top left, below the following typed caption: "Back-up Flight Crew GT-12". The names of the crew are typed across the cover with ink signatures above: "Gordon Cooper", and "Eugene Cernan". Cooper, one of the "Mercury Seven," had previously flown on MA-9 and GT-5. Cernan had flown Gemini 9A and would serve as Apollo 10 lunar module pilot, and later the commander of Apollo 17. Very fine.Gemini 12, commanded by Jim Lovell with pilot Buzz Aldrin, was the final flight of the Gemini program, proving critical rendezvous and EVA techniques that paved the way for Apollo. Backup crew signed covers are particularly desirable as they highlight the alternate astronauts who stood ready to fly the mission if needed. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke
