Description

Apollo 8 Crew-Signed Launch Cover (Post Card). A philatelic postcard from KSC in Florida with the appearance of a cover. A 6ยข Christmas stamp is affixed, bearing a pictorial machine cancelation from Kennedy Space Center dated December 21, 1968, the day that Apollo 8 was launched. The cachet is printed in blue with a graphic, the mission, and the surnames of the crew. Over the cachet the crew has boldly signed in blue and black felt tips: "Frank Borman", "James Lovell", and "Bill Anders". Crew-signed items from this mission are scarce and desirable. Included with the lot is an 8" x 10" color print for display or matting purposes. Typed address hidden by an applied white label. Very fine.

A recovery ship cover is a type of postal collectible featuring envelopes or postcards that were postmarked aboard the recovery ships used to retrieve astronauts and spacecraft after splashdown in the ocean. During the Apollo program, after the Command Module re-entered Earth's atmosphere and landed in the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean, specially designated Navy ships, such as aircraft carriers or destroyers, would recover the crew and spacecraft. These covers often feature unique cancellation marks from the recovery ship, noting the mission date and sometimes the name of the ship. Each recovery ship cover offers a tangible link to the specific Apollo mission it represents, making it a prized piece of space memorabilia. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
