The first Apollo 14 flown cover Heritage has offered
Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown Limited Edition, #51/55,
"Quarantine" Cover, Numbered and Signed by Edgar Mitchell with His
Signed and Notarized Statement of Authenticity, also Signed and
Expertised by Two Renowned European Philatelic Experts, Giulio
Bolaffi and Enzo Diena. A philatelic cover with the Bishop
mission emblem and three astronaut pins cachet, the 10¢ "First Man
On The Moon" stamp hand canceled at Houston on February 27, 1971,
with the additional rubber stamp explaining: "Delayed In Quarantine
At Lunar Receiving Laboratory M.S.C. - Houston, Texas". At bottom,
it is numbered "No. 51 of 55" and printed "Carried To The Moon
Aboard Apollo 14". It is signed in black felt tip: "Edgar
Mitchell". It is also signed, in light pencil, by the two
above-mentioned experts. Extremely rare. This is one of only six
covers identified as being sold (all in Europe) on Chris Spain's
Space Flown Artifacts website; it was purchased in 2007 by Bracke
for $24,000 Euros ($32,000 US). Excellent.Included with the lot is a 6" x 3.5" card filled out and signed by Mitchell that reads, in full: "No. 51 of 55 Covers Carried To The Moon Aboard Apollo 14, Released From Quarantine at 5 P.M. Feb. 26, 1971. [signed] Edgar A. Mitchell." It has been notarized in the state of Florida. Individual illustrated signed LOAs are also included from Giulio Bolaffi and Enzo Diena.
Also included with the lot is a typed letter signed from Edgar Mitchell on his personal letterhead, one page, October 15, 1979, to Jacques Bracke, referring him to Giulio Bolaffi as he was seeking covers. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
