Description

Apollo 11 Crew-Signed Insurance Cover with Dow-Unicover Cachet. A philatelic cover, 6.5" x 3.625", with the "Apollo 8" 6¢ stamp (Scott #1371) affixed, bearing a pictorial machine from Kennedy Space Center dated July 16, 1969, the day that Apollo 11 was launched. The dark blue monotone cachet features the text "Project Apollo/ Apollo XI/ The First/ Step.../ First Manned Lunar Landing" along with artist drawings of the crew and the first step from the LM ladder. It is signed in the address area, all in blue felt tip: "Neil Armstrong (cancellation over a portion of his signature), "M Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". Excellent condition.

Insurance covers were a tradition that started with this mission. The astronauts would all sign a certain quantity of these covers to be left on earth as a contingency against their failing to return safely from the moon. In the case of a tragedy, the covers would be sold with the proceeds benefiting their families, not unlike an insurance policy.
