Description

"I recognize that there are still areas where we are behind - at least in one area, the size of the booster - this year I hope the United States will be ahead." -John F. Kennedy, regarding this launch

Saturn I Saturn-Apollo 5 (SA-5): NASA Countdown Manual Dated December 6, 1963. An 8.5" x 11" comb-bound manual of 100+ pages with a color cover depicting the rocket blasting off. The name "E. J. MOORE" is stamped on the front. SA-5 was the first time that the Saturn I would fly in two stages including the S-IV second stage and also the first orbital flight in the Apollo program. It successfully launched on January 29, 1964, finally proving that the United States could build launch vehicles as large as the Soviet Union, an important step toward Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s. The first of these we have offered. Fine.

Objectives listed on title page: "To Provide A Sequence Of Operation Required To Prepare The Launch Vehicle To The Point Of Firing Command (Initiation Of Terminal Firing Sequence); To Provide Emergency Procedures For Safing Of Vehicle In The Event Of Standard Malfunctions; To Provide The AMR Range And Other NASA Centers With A Listing Of Interrelated Items For Accomplishment Before And After Liftoff; And To Provide The Complex Crews With The Immediate Post- Launch Securing Operations"
