Description
Project Mercury NASA Capsule Flight Operations Manual SED109, Dated September 1, 1961, by McDonnell Aircraft, for Capsules 10, 13, and 16-20. An amazing, all original book from an individual who worked at Cape Canaveral during this period. This was the handbook used to train all the Mercury-Atlas astronauts: John Glenn (Friendship 7 / Capsule 13); Wally Schirra (Sigma 7 / Capsule 16); Scott Carpenter (Aurora 7 / Capsule 18); and Gordon Cooper (Faith 7 / Capsule 20). It consists of 120+ pages, 5" x 7" in size, most on paper with the "Astronaut's Check List" section on cardstock, all three-hole punched in a custom McDonnell binder, 6" x 7.5" x 1". In the front are several lined pages two of which have handwritten lists of people who participated in tests and their positions covering Capsule 9 (Enos) and Capsule 13 (John Glenn). There are four major sections: I- Normal Procedures; II- Emergency Procedures; III- Trouble Shooting; and IV- Astronaut's Check List (Normal and Emergency Procedures). The book is well-illustrated with several pull-out charts. The Introduction explains its purpose: "The detailed preparation required of the astronaut in attempting a mission of the magnitude and scope of PROJECT MERCURY obviously cannot and need not be covered in a document of the handbook type. Prior to any actual attempt to launch a manned capsule, many weeks will be spent by the astronaut in an extensive training and familiarization program. The information contained in this manual, therefore, will pre-suppose a detailed knowledge of the capsule systems by the astronaut, and will be confined, for the most part, to procedural data." Note: Capsules 10, 17, and 19 were unflown backups. An incredible piece, rarely offered, worthy of the finest collections. Signs of moderate use, a few notations inside, overall very fine.Auction Info
