Description

Lindbergh's Autobiography, Signed on the Frontispiece Portrait

Charles Lindbergh Signed Book: We, with JSA LOA. (New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1927). First edition, nineteenth impression. Beautifully signed in blue fountain pen on the frontis, an image of him standing next to his plane (We?) the Spirit of St. Louis: " Charles A. Lindbergh". This book was published only 57 days after Lindbergh completed his historic Orteig Prize-winning first-ever non-stop solo transatlantic flight from New York (Roosevelt Field) to Paris (Le Bourget) on May 20-21, 1927, in the single-engine Ryan monoplane. It had been ghost-written based on interviews but Lindbergh rejected the book's galley proofs as "cheaply done" and written in a "false, fawning" tone and set about to re-write it by longhand, taking only three weeks, and delaying the publication less than a month. It was reprinted dozens of times and sold more than 650,000 copies in the first year earning the young aviator $250,000 in royalties. Blue cloth with gilt titles and plane image, octavo, 318 pages, frontispiece photograph, illustrations throughout. Front hinge starting, gilt fading, light wear, a very presentable copy with a great signature on a desirable photo. Included with this lot is a full JSA LOA.
