Neil Armstrong Korean War Autograph Letter Signed to His Father
Regarding His Plane Being Hit by Enemy Fire. A one-page letter
on plain paper, dated September 9 [1951], where he tells his dad a
brief summary of his now-famous enemy fire incident of September 3,
1951. It reads, in full:"September 9-
"Dear Dad-
"A short note to you with some pertinent details. THINGS AREN'T QUITE AS EASY as I pointed out in my last letter to mother, although they could be a lot worse. I don't want her to worry too much.
"The day after I wrote my last letter I was hit by enemy fire & almost lost my aircraft in a dive about 100 miles behind enemy lines. I managed to nurse the plane back to friendly territory & bailed out safely. More details in next letter. The next day, two of our boys in the squadron were shot down. It was pretty grim.
"Enclosed, you'll find a copy of my will, the original of which is in Navy files.
"Neil [added paraph]"
See adjacent lot for the will he sent. Offered here is a totally unique handwritten period account of an incident that is part of the Armstrong legend and mystique. Don't let this one get away! Original mailing folds, ink smear on his name, otherwise fine.
